The story of Dr. Martens began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole to aid his injured foot during recovery from a skiing accident. Partnering with Dr. Herbert Funck, they developed and produced the shoes using soles made from recycled rubber tires. By 1959, the shoes, originally named Dr. Maertens, were a hit in Germany.

Despite initial skepticism from manufacturers, the R. Griggs Group in England embraced the idea and created the first work boot with an air-cushioned sole. On April 1, 1960, the iconic cherry red eight-eyelet boot was born and named 1460. To appeal to an English audience, the brand was renamed Dr. Martens, leading to the creation of the AirWair range that has become a symbol of rebellious fashion and enduring heritage.
